Home win for Men's 1s

WBTHC 1s looked to bounce back from a poor performance last week, when they welcomed Durham University. In the opening period WBTHC enjoyed the majority of possession as they patiently controlled the game and looked for an opening in the Durham defence. The pressure soon told as Chris Traynor made a decisive baseline run, pulling the ball back for his strike partner Alex Lockey to finish from close range and give the home team a much deserved lead. WBTHC flooded forward looking for more goals and pushed the Durham team deep into their own area to defend in large numbers, however this left WBTHC vulnerable to breaks which they found out to their cost when a Durham forward latched onto a long ball and finished past the outrushing Fotheringham in goal. The half finished 1.1 much to the annoyance of the home team.

The second half started much like the first, with early home possession and pressure, which resulted in a penalty corner goal from Stoddart at the back post. Durham now had little option but to chase the game and this gave WBTHC much more room to find their passes, creating several more chances one of which was finished powerfully by Andy Titmus to make the score 3.1. Durham now gave one final effort to get back in the game and a mistake in midfield gave the away team the lifeline they needed. The Durham forward dispatched their chance to give them hope an unlikely late fight back. In the final minutes of the game WBTHC still continued to push forward rather than defending their lead and won a series of penalty corners. A great combination from Baeder and Traynor delivered the final nail in Durham’s Coffin as the ball was sent into the top corner of the net by Traynor.
