Former Chairperson of WBTHC, Steve Troup pays tribute to former Tynemouth player.
It is with great sadness that I have to say that a long-standing member of the old “Tynemouth Men’s Hockey Club” passed away last week. Frederick Osborne (Fred) Crouch will only be known to a few members of our present club but he played a huge part in hockey in the region. He was 86 and had a period of illness.
Fred’s first entry in the club records is from 1965 when he was 26. From the season 67/68 onwards Fred took on various roles within the club and on the Northumberland County Committee. His first role was as 1st team Vice Captain; then followed Secretary – on several occasions – President, League Rep, 1st team captain and Chairman of the League.
Fred had a noticeable style as he was left handed and played with his right hand at the top of the stick. He played for North Durham – which was the club’s original name – and was influential in the move of Northumbria – as the club became known – from Backworth Hall to Tynemouth.
At the age of 76 he had trials for England and was chosen to play against Holland. They won 4-1 and he received a gold medal and shirt baring the 3 lions.
He was extremely youthful, full of mischief and gave his life to the club. His wife, Sheila, says that if they had anything to plan, the Club always came first.
Details of his funeral service are;
16th July at 12.30
Northumberland Woodland Burial and Crematorium, Bockenfield, Morpeth NE65 9QJ.
