Returns to fitness in the Whitley Bay men's hockey squad weren't enough to secure all 3 points on Saturday

Returns to fitness in the Whitley Bay men's hockey squad weren't enough to secure all 3 points on Saturday as they had to come back late on to seal a 3-3 draw at home to Wakefield HC.

Both teams struggled to find any rhythm in the open exchanges of the 1st half, with Whitley Bay coming the closest to scoring when Phil Ithurralde just couldn't connect with a Chris Traynor cross and the ball went inches wide.
Wakefield took the lead after some confusion at the back. Steven Hill stopping as he thought the umpire had stopped play, but only allowing Ollie Holmes a free shot on goal.

It wasn't long before Whitley Bay were back on level terms and then ahead into the break. James Redpath finding an equaliser from a penalty corner and then Jonathan Stoddart giving them the lead as they turned the ball over high up the pitch.

The second half lacked much flow as neither team were at their best and both struggled to find an long spells of possession. However again Wakefield again scored first, Greg Moorhouse this time with a strong drag-flick from a penalty corner.
They then took the lead through Simon Ball at the following penalty corner. Moorhouse went the same side with another drag-flick but defender Jervis Fleming was able to pick the ball above his head, only to have the ball unfortunately land at Simon Ball's feet, who calmly finished.

As time ticked on and Wakefield thought they had done enough to win all 3 points Stoddart stepped up again and scored through yet another penalty corner of the game. This time he was able to flick the ball into the side netting as Whitley's first attempt had been saved by keeper James Jones.

The game ended 3-3 and both teams shared the points. Whitley will host Timperley next Saturday with their last home game of the season, as they try to finish on a high.
