This weeks fixtures gave the Northumbria University student members of WBTHC a chance to play Newcastle Uni for the 2nd time over Stan Calvert weekend

The student members of the WBTHC 2 provided a great deal of entertainment during the warm up preparations for the match as they were still carrying ‘excitement’ from their Friday night out. This jovial mood took its toll though as Matt Andrews went over on his ankle and limped off before the match had even got underway. Despite this set-back and a quick change to the starting line-up WBTHC stated the match brightly and quickly dominated the early possession. When the breakthrough came from a short corner deflection off the stick of Alex Flynn it was no more than the home team deserved. WBTHC consolidated and restricted Newcastle University from creating much in the way of goal scoring chances as the 1st half continued. A 2nd goal for WBTHC though Matt Saxton gave the home side a 2-0 advantage at the break.
The usual 2nd half dip hit the home side again and by cheaply turning over possession WBTHC invited pressure on themselves during the early exchanges of the 2nd half. The visitors got their reward for this pressure following a series of short corners which resulted in a very good straight strike finding the bottom corner. WBTHC recovered from this poor patch and began to work themselves back into the game. As the 2nd half moved on WBTHC were able to score 2 more goals, one from Dan Jones and a second from Matt Saxton. From then on there was only going to be one result with both teams just playing out remaining minutes, the match finished 4-1.
This win sees WBTHC all-but secure one of the top 2 spots in the league and promotion to the North East Premier League - a few big wins for Gateshead would still see them snatching 2nd place. 1 point separates the WBTHC 2 from the title and a very tough test against a strong Marton Furness team awaits in the final match of the season, which has been nicely set up as a title decider.
